Discussion Group: Non Invasive Human Monitoring Systems

<< Back to Programme Listing

Over the last five years there has been a considerable increase in the number of monitoring systems brought to the market. Most of these are wireless to ensure that the person being monitored is not encumbered in movement nor finds it invasive when going about their every day routine. Examples include:

1. Physical movement/activity
2. Temperature, heart rate, blood pressure
3. Sweat, urine analysis

In addition, considerable effort is being placed on developing wireless network systems. Some of these are dedicated to a specific monitoring system, whilst others are generic, to enable system developers to link there system in.

Targeted patient groups include diabetics and people with heart conditions as these represent large markets.

Discussion topics:
• Are generic wireless systems suitable for all applications or are custom systems more suitable?
• Do the end users really want 24 hr monitoring?
• If 24 hr monitoring for a complete group of patients were taken up (e.g. diabetic people) would the response mechanism be available?
• Do the people purchasing systems need more education as to how the new monitoring systems can alter/improve their approach for treating patients?
• Should there be focus on healthy people as well?
• What is the best marketing approach, private or the NHS?
