Nanotechnology

There is plenty of innovation in the field of nanomedicine. For example devices that detect pressure or temperature, eject a dose of medicine or detect biomarkers in real time, thereby acting as an early-warning system for cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

However bringing new devices to market can be prohibitively expensive. Nanotechnology needs to be integrated with other disciplines and developed in collaboration with others, for example to enable re-use of a design, or its building blocks, for different types of products.

The Medical Innovation Forum brings together the expertise of clinicians, life scientists, engineers and industry to explore opportunities to collaborate in the research, development and commercialisation of nanotechnology innovation in healthcare.

A programme of roundtable discussion groups are being staged so as to bring together participants who share common interests.

Discussion groups already confirmed include:

Discussion Group: Micromoulding for medical device manufacture
Ben Whiteside, Director - Centre of Micro & Nano Moulding, University of Bradford

Discussion Group: Nanomedicine: Likely trends and certain challenges
Richard Moore, Manager Nanomedicine and Lifesciences, Institute of Nanotechnology, University of Stirling

Discussion Group: Materials and Nanotechnology
Dr Martin Highett, Centre Manager, Sorby Nano Investigation Centre, University of Sheffield
